Accident in South Lebanon involving UNIFIL Soldiers

23 Feb 2014

On February 23rd 2014, two UNIFIL soldiers, one from El Salvador and the other from Spain, have lost their lives, in addition to three other soldiers from El Salvador who sustained severe injuries when their vehicle flipped over on the road in the Wazzani near the Israeli-occupied village of Ghajar.

The bodies of the dead soldiers were taken to the Miguel de Cervantes base, while the injured soldiers were transported by chopper to Saint George Hospital in Beirut.

Contacted early Sunday morning by Colonel Molina, Commander of the Salvadoran contingent, the Consul rushed to the hospital to offer whatever support he could give to the Spanish and Salvadoran personnel there. He immediately contacted the Ambassador of El Salvador in Qatar for instructions, which he carried them out to the letter. He visited the hospital for three days in a row in order to make sure the soldiers were well taken care of. He also sent a condolence letter to the Salvadoran Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
