Like that of the Federal Republic of Central America, the flag of El Salvador, officially adopted in 1912, is divided into three horizontal bands of blue on top, white in the middle, and blue on the bottom. The blue bands symbolize the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean sea, while the white band represents the land between the two bodies of water, as well as peace and prosperity.
The main version of El Salvador’s national flag, used by government organizations, has the coat of arms of the country centered on the white stripe.
An alternate version of the flag has the national motto “Dios, Union, Libertad” (God, Union, Liberty) written in yellow across the white stripe instead of the coat of arms. This flag is often used as the civil flag.
