Up until the recent past El Salvador’s diplomatic outreach has been primarily regional and multilateral. However, the consistent strengthening of bilateral relations has increasingly been an essential element of the country’s overall diplomatic strategy. This has been accomplished by utilizing the country’s diplomatic, consular and honorary consular network.
On September 25, 2007, H.E. MrFawziSalloukh, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lebanon, and H.E. Mr. Francisco Esteban Laínez, Minister of Foreign Affairs of El Salvador, signed a Joint Communiqué establishing formal diplomatic relations between the two countries.
The Joint Communiqué states that “the Governments of Lebanon and El Salvador, desirous of promoting the spirit of mutual understanding and developing ties of friendship and cooperation between the two countries and peoples, have agreed to establish diplomatic relations, at the ambassadorial level, as from September 25, 2007”.
The joint efforts of Lebanon and El Salvador have led to the official opening of the Honorary Consulate of El Salvador on October 17, 2012 with consular jurisdiction over the entire Lebanese territory.
