Institutional Strengthening of Tourism in El Salvador

Staying in their posts for more than one term of office generally means that good leaders of state institutions produce good results.

Jose Napoleon Duarte has served as Minister of Tourism for El Salvador since June 1, 2009, appointed by President Mauricio Funes, and in 2014 was confirmed into office by the current president. During his mandate El Salvador received the first time more than $1 billion from the tourism sector.

Reports show that between January and December 2015 1,972,900 people came into the country, 4.6% more than in 2014. 

The Minister of Tourism of El Salvador noted that "... 'In 2015, we officially achieved growth of 4.6%. The growth is sustainable and depends heavily on the markets that are growing and emerging".

Elmundo.sv reports that "... The projection for 2016 by Mitur is a 3.9% increase in the number of tourists which will reach 2.04 million people. Duarte added that "This year we will reach more than two million people. It is a lot of people. And every time it will be more difficult to bring in tourists (...). We'll have to look in 2017 for a total transformation of the marketing strategy".
