The Potential of the Gulf of Fonseca

03 Aug 2017

The ambitious joint plan of the governments of Honduras, Nicaragua and El Salvador is to turn the Gulf of Fonseca into an area of free trade and sustainable tourism.
The aim is to create a long-term master plan in conjunction with the private sector, to turn the area into an economic development hub and the main difference from past initiatives is the involvement of the business sector.

Elnuevodiario.com.ni reports that "... The declaration signed yesterday by the presidents has four points, in the first of them the Trinational Commission in permanent coordination with the competent state institutions guarantees a constant communication with the CABEI for the formulation of the Master Plan of Investment and Development Projects for the Zone of Gulf of Fonseca."

José Adán Aguerri, president of the Superior Council of Private Enterprise (Cosep), explained to Elnuevodiario.com.ni that "... "We must see the gulf as an effort made by the three countries, it is said that there is gas, and the other thing that is a reality is the potential for marine exploitation, in that sense they are the two areas that have immediate potential for us.""
